Wi-Fi waterside, if you trust your laptop so near!

There are Wi-Fi hot spots across Malta now, but not all are conducive to business meetings or quiet working. You can work in most hotel lobbies, for instance – but most expect you to buy a voucher. The list below includes locations we have used in the past to access wireless internet for free. We’ll keep it updated. Please include any others you are aware of in the comments section below and feel free to add info on coffees, snacks and other facilities that go with the Wi-Fi!

The Red Lion pub had an open wifi last time we were there, but the signal was a bit erratic.

The Cafe Royal in Victoria Gozo has open wifi, excellent cakes and cheap drinks !

You actually make it seem so easy with your presentation however I find this matter to be actually
one thing that I believe I would never understand. It kind of feels
too complex and extremely broad for me. I’m having a look ahead to your subsequent post, I will try to get the grasp of it!

Why isn’t there wi-fi access services in Marsaxlokk main square, such a popular location with tourists especially? Is it possible to have it there? So many tourists ask me to show them info on local sites but there’s no access.

Just back from Malta; there is Wifi at the central bus station in Zejtun in the NEW WAVE kiosk as well as good food or drinks. Ask Sammy or his staff for the access code.

There’s free wifi in many places in Gozo, where I live at different times in the year. My favourite spot is the new Clock House cafe in Victoria. Wifi is free and fast, coffee is great and the guys and gals there are quick to help out with any tech issues too… Love my iPad but hopeless with technology….

Hi all, everyone mentions free wi-fi in Malta but nobody mentions the danger it brings especially when using personal information like banking or shopping online, when I use any free wi-fi, first I’ll make sure I use a proxy server like TOR for surfing anonymous and be safe. happy surfing

Great resource! Thanks for compiling the list. Hopefully more entities will start offering free wi-fi spots.

    Hi Elizabeth

Thanks for that info, will take a look at the places you have suggested. I kind of just didn’t want to be spending a lot of time in Macdonalds or hotel lobbies using the wifi(although I dont really mind cafes, I don’t know if the owners would be happy with me spending hours Wifing it for research) but if it comes down to that then I may have to. Thanks for the expat link, will check that out.

Gary, have you looked at Vodafone Malta or go.com.mt the other main mobile company? Melita Cable hasn’t yet launched it’s dongle service as far as I know. I suggest you try to hook up to free wifi and enjoy working from the various cafes though as I heard dongles are expensive to use here. I found this link that might help: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091118054559AADN8XB

Also there is quite a bit of relatively up to date info here: http://www.britishexpat.com/expatforum/malta/viewtopic.php?t=10109

  19. Garry Crystal says

Does anyone in Malta know if there are Pay As You go Broadband dongles available to buy in Malta. Am coming for a month or two and intend to continue working as a freelance writer but cannot find any PAYG dongles available, any clues.

Yes, was over in Gozo at the weekend and visited a great little place in Victoria which I think is called the Clock House on Republic Street – super fast connection for browsing and great service too – just ask at the counter they’ll be happy to help.

McDonalds outlets have open Wi-fi zones and do not require a password. If you don’t want to grab a cappuccino (actually quite good, at Mac Cafe’s) you can try and hover in the area around McDonald’s in the Plaza Centre in Sliema, and see what signal you pick up.

  27. Elizabeth Ayling says

    August 9, 2010 at 09:57

I think you’ll have to test it out. Depends if they have a key you need to know. But, let’s face it, it’s really cheap to sit there an hour or more for the price of a regular Americano coffee!

  28. kathleen says

    August 9, 2010 at 07:02

Do you have to go into Mc Donald’s to acess the free wi fi or can you sit outside thanks kathleen

Re: Kenneth’s reply last year (31st December ’09) was rightly spotted!
Old Railway Station Garden (Gnien l-iStazzjon), B’Kara has free Wi-Fi, after it was revamped and made into a more child-safe play ground, they installed the free Wi-Fi facility (which can also be used if waiting for a bus to leave while in the terminus!!)

  30. Elizabeth Ayling says

    July 4, 2010 at 13:29

Yes, I agree that the South is less well served. I guess Birgu, being more equipped with restaurants and cafes that not only locals but also visitors use (del Borgo wine bar for eg) has better wi-fi coverage. Anyone know if the restaurants along the Birgu Waterfront have wi-fi? If you come across any in the South, do post them up here. Thanks for this useful point.

  31. Rita says

    July 4, 2010 at 09:06

Just noticing that in South of Malta like Kalkara, Zabbar and even Cottonera cities there are few wifi hotspots.I m very dissapointed. It s good to have wifi in these areas please. Thanks

Just back. Found a free hot spot at the cafe next to Upper Barrakka Gardens – Cafe Deux Baronnes. You need to ask for the password (and then interpret the writing!).
Also, and I checked but did not use it, Limestone Heritage in Siggiewi have free wifi.

  37. Elizabeth Ayling says

    January 25, 2010 at 15:11

Paul, Zebbug is the village/town next to mine and I can’t think of any hotspots there. These towns don’t have the kind of cafes that think Wi-Fi a plus or a crowd-puller! They aren’t tourist places, so locals just go to the bar for a beer etc. Not for hot-desking or a relaxed cappuccino while they wi-fi surf! Stick to making a trip to Sliema, St Julian’s, Valletta etc for wi-fi.

  38. Mark says

    January 22, 2010 at 22:25

    Great information! Thanks.
All McDonalds have free wifi – Luqa, Valletta, Bugibba, St George’ Bay, Spinola, B’kara, Sliema and Victoria Gozo

I have also used free wi-fi here:

    Valletta – McDonald’s
Valletta – Burger King (requires login, ask at the counter)
Valletta – Cafe’ Jubilee (requires login, ask at the counter)
Luqa – McDonald’s by the airport

Another great spot with wi-fi are all the Cafe Jubilee outlets in Gzira, Valletta (which i use regularly) and I believe the Gozo outlet in Victoria has too – just ask the waiters for the FREE passkey.
